Aldo Freund

Aldo Freund (*1985, Kassel) lives and works in Frankfurt am Main and Berlin. His practice unfolds in the space between resistance and resignation, drawing on observations of social interaction, human needs and the ways they are communicated, performed and concealed. Working primarily through sculpture while extending into painting, large-scale print, installation, performance and digital collage, Freund develops works that expose states of vulnerability and contradiction. Processes of removal and reduction frequently play a central role in his practice. By stripping away visual substance, he reveals underlying structures, emotional cores and forms of interiority that often remain hidden. Across a diverse range of materials and media, Freund constructs an aesthetic language marked by apparent oppositions: childlike yet unsettling, tender yet painful, humorous yet shaped by experiences of powerlessness and loss. Rather than resolving these tensions, his works inhabit them, creating spaces in which emotional and social ambiguities become materially and visually tangible. Freund studied at the Hochschule für Gestaltung Offenbach from 2006 to 2012, where he completed his Diploma in 2012. He subsequently pursued postgraduate studies at the Hochschule für Gestaltung Offenbach from 2012 to 2013.
