Soyeong Jeong

biography

Soyeong Jeong's painting practice investigates the relationship between memory, intimacy and lived experience. Working from personal photographs and moments drawn from everyday life, Soyeong constructs paintings that exist between documentation and reconstruction, where remembered experience is continuously reshaped through emotion and time. Rather than recording specific events, her works explore how memory functions as an unstable yet deeply embodied space—one in which personal histories become fragmented, softened and reimagined.

Central to Soyeong's practice is the body as a site of emotional inscription. Gestures, glances and physical proximity become vehicles through which affection, vulnerability and interpersonal relationships are negotiated. Her figures occupy quiet, suspended moments that resist narrative resolution, allowing psychological atmosphere to emerge over explicit storytelling. Soyeong's paintings invite viewers into spaces where intimacy is experienced less as representation than as an affective condition.

Soyeong's recent works increasingly engage with the visual language of analogue photography. Through muted palettes, softened contours and the recurring use of warm ochre and yellow tones, her paintings evoke the material qualities of fading photographs and cinematic stills. These chromatic decisions reinforce the temporal ambiguity of the images, positioning them between presence and absence, recollection and invention. For Soyeong, memory is understood not as a fixed archive but as an active process of continual reconstruction.

While deeply rooted in autobiographical experience, Soyeong's paintings extend beyond the personal to consider universal questions of attachment, loss and emotional permanence. Her practice transforms private encounters into images that remain deliberately open, allowing viewers to project their own memories and emotional experiences into the spaces she constructs.

Since 2021, Soyeong has studied Painting at the Hochschule für Gestaltung Offenbach. She has received the Deutschlandstipendium for the academic years 2024–2025 and 2025–2026. Her work has been presented in exhibitions including Notes on Shared Realities at Mars, Frankfurt am Main (2024), grünesoße at Projektraum Bethanien, Berlin (2025), and the solo presentation Closer as part of one artist // one wall at saasfee*pavillon, Frankfurt am Main (2025). In 2025, she received the Rundgang Prize of the Hochschule für Gestaltung Offenbach.
